Women’s City Club Award TMC Migrant Family Aspirations Essay Award

Laredo, TX – The winners of TMC’s Migrant Family Aspirations Award were announced during the Women’s City Club “Pennies for Tennies” fundraiser held at KGNS Studio. Karen Talancon, a student at LISD’s Early College High School and Jose Castillo, a student at UISD’s LBJ High School were the winners of this years Migrant Family Aspirations Essay Award writing contest. Each student received a $1000 trust fund scholarship for his essay from the Women’s City Club.

The theme of this years essay was: “How I Can Make a Difference in my Community’s Future.” Students who migrate with their family or whose parents migrate to the north to harvest vegetables/fruits were asked to enter their essay into the contest. The essays were judged by members of the Women’s City Club.

Karen was represented by her parents Rosendo and Maria Talancon; since she was busy taking the ACT college entrance exam that morning. Jose was accompanied by his brother Adrian since his parents were still harvesting vegetable in the Renville, MN area.
