Winnemucca, NV –The children of the Winnemucca Center received a visit from the law enforcement community today. Officer Castaneda with the Humboldt County Sheriffs Office discussed with the children the importance of recognizing safety signs. He taught them about personal safety – stranger danger, crossing the street, train safety, vehicle safety and wearing a seat belt. Also, Officer Castaneda spoke to the children about bike safety, and the different methods for staying safe while at home; including locking doors and not answering the door or phone while their parents are not home.
Officer Castaneda spoke to the children about the D.A.R.E (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) Program. The D.A.R.E presentation included not taking things in to your body that are harmful like drugs, tobacco etc. Officer Castaneda discussed how to avoid peer pressure and how to make the best decisions possible. He challenged the children to choose good friends that make good choices. The children had the opportunity to tour Officer Castaneda’s sheriff truck and enjoyed the opportunity to use the siren. The Humboldt County Sherriff’s Department provided a goody bag with a shirt for each child, coloring books, pencils and other items that stressed the importance of safety.
